Gadgets to be controlled by sound, gesture

GLASGOW, Scotland, April 4 (UPI) -- Digital music players and other audio gadgets may some day be controlled by movement and sound, Scottish researchers said.

University of Glasgow researchers have been developing "audio clouds" to control gadgets using movement and sound -- as opposed to the visually based machines used today.

"The idea behind the whole thing is to look at new ways to present information," Stephen Brewster told the BBC.

"We hope to develop interfaces that are truly mobile, allowing users to concentrate on the real world while interacting with their mobile device as naturally as if they were talking to a friend while walking."

Brewster, who presented his work at a U.S. computer interface conference, says the future is in developing ways to control gadgets that incorporates 3D sound. For 3D sound, researchers have been working on bone conductant headphones, which can be placed behind the ears and the sound is transmitted through the ear bone.
