Survey: Public favors stem cell research

WASHINGTON, March 25 (UPI) -- A new survey indicates that approximately 70 percent of U.S. adults support embryonic-stem-cell and cloning research.

The results of the survey, conducted by the Coalition for the Advancement of Medical Research, a patient advocacy group, comes as members of the House have agreed to a vote in the next two-to-three months on legislation that would ease President Bush's restrictions on stem-cell research, The Washington Post reported.

CAMR's survey of more than 1,000 adults found 68 percent favored embryonic-stem-cell research and 72 percent supported therapeutic-cloning research.

The survey also found people were more likely to support the research when it was explained to them. Initially, only 59 percent and 60 percent, respectively, supported stem-cell and cloning research, but after they were read a statement describing the research, the approval ratings increased to the levels reported.

CAMR President Daniel Perry said the survey results show the more the American public knows, "the more they support it and understand why it's critical to move the research forward."
