Sumatra ripe for another earthquake

LONDONDERRY, Northern Ireland, March 17 (UPI) -- Scientists from Northern Ireland say Sumatra risks another big earthquake from the effects of the earthquake that caused the deadly December 2004 tsunami.

A team from the University of Ulster's School of Environmental Sciences, in a study summarized in this week's edition of the journal Nature, said the Sumatra-Andaman earthquake significantly increased the stress on two other fault zones in the area.

One of those zones runs directly under the city of Banda Aceh, where tens of thousands died Dec. 26; and the other runs under the sea off the west coast of Sumatra. The latter could generate another tsunami.

The team called for a tsunami early warning system to be put in the Indian Ocean as a "matter of urgency."
