Study: diarrhea cases caused by Norovirus

BALTIMORE, March 9 (UPI) -- Scientists from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health say a majority of diarrhea cases among tourists in Mexico are caused by Norovirus.

The study, published in the March 2005 issue of the Journal of Clinical Microbiology, said Norovirus, a common cause of nonbacterial gastroenteritis outbreaks, also caused a majority of traveler's diarrhea cases among U.S. tourists in Guatemala.

The study's authors said the longer travelers stayed at their destination, the more likely they were to contract Norovirus infections.

The researchers examined stool samples from 34 individuals who experienced diarrhea during trips to Antigua, Guatemala, or Cuernavaca, Mexico. They found 65 percent of the samples tested positive for Norovirus.
