ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia, March 4 (UPI) -- A U.N. report offers three scenarios projecting the number of new HIV/AIDS cases in Africa ranging from 65 million to 89 million in 2025.
At the same time, the report by the Geneva-based Joint U.N. Program on HIV/AIDS, known as UNAIDS, released in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Friday, said depending on actions currently taken, up to 43 million HIV infections could be averted over the next 20 years.
The report presented three possible case studies for how the AIDS epidemic in Africa could evolve.
"The scenarios are not predictions. They are plausible stories about the future," said Dr. Peter Piot, UNAIDS executive director. "The scenarios highlight the various choices that are likely to confront African countries in the coming decades."
The scenarios were labeled "Tough choices," "Times of transition" and "Traps and legacies."
Dominique De Santis, UNAIDS executive director in Geneva, told United Press International the stories were "theoretical examples of what may happen in 2025 based on decisions made today in response to the epidemic. These scenarios were developed by groups of Africans. They are stories that may happen."
