ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia, March 4 (UPI) -- Actions taken today could prevent as many as 43 million HIV infections in the next 20 years, the U.N. Program on HIV/AIDS in Africa says.
A report issued by the agency presents three possible case studies on how the AIDS epidemic in Africa could evolve in the next 20 years based on policy decisions now, Medical News Today reported Friday.
"The scenarios are not predictions. They are plausible stories about the future," said Dr. Peter Piot, UNAIDS executive director. "The scenarios highlight the various choices that are likely to confront African countries in the coming decades."
Millions of new infections can be prevented if Africa and the rest of the world decides to tackle AIDS as an exceptional crisis that has the potential to devastate entire societies and economies, the report said.
