ATLANTA, Feb. 7 (UPI) -- Flu shots for those in the United States may be restricted again this year to people with the greatest health risks.

"If we have a very significant shortage, we would want to target the highest-risk people from the start of the season," said Julie Gerberding, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.

"On the other hand, if we have a good prospect of having 80 or 90 million doses, like we've had in recent years, we may start out suggesting high-priority people go first, but letting people know we expect to have enough vaccine to go around,"she added.

However, health officials say if vaccine makers can provide 100 million doses for the United States there would be no need for restrictions, USA Today reported Monday.

So far, vaccine manufacturers forecast they will make 70 million doses for the United States.

The CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices is to meet Thursday and Friday to issue its flu vaccine recommendations.
