New virus attacks through online messenger

TAIPEI, Taiwan, Feb. 4 (UPI) -- A new virus has spread from Asia to attack computers around the world through the MSN Messenger program, the Taipei Times reported Friday.

The virus, called WORM_BROPIA.F, was first found in South Korea and has rapidly spread to China, Taiwan and other countries, the newspaper said, quoting Jony Wu, an associate manager at anti-virus company Trend Micro Inc. in Taipei.

By Thursday, more than 3,000 computer users had reported damage from the virus in Taiwan alone. The number may have grown to 10,000, Wu said.

Once the virus infects a computer, it resides in the memory and installs a backdoor on the system, allowing unauthorized remote access to the computer, the report said. It then automatically spreads the worm to contacts in MSN Messenger.

Files named Bedroom-thongs.pif, Hot.pif, Naked_drunk.pif, New_webcam.pif and Underware.Pif have all been found to contain the virus.
