PBS pulls intelligent design documentary

WASHINGTON, Jan. 8 (UPI) -- PBS has pulled from its Web site a science film examining the theory of intelligent design, after airing it on dozens of U.S. stations.

"Unlocking the Mystery of Life," which the Public Broadcasting Service broadcast in markets like Los Angeles, New York and Miami, was pulled this week from its Web site, said a spokesman for Seattle's Discovery Institute.

PBS was selling the 58-minute film, which surveys intelligent design theory as espoused by a group of secular scientists, as recently as Wednesday.

Among the scientists featured on the PBS documentary are biochemistry professor Michael Behe of Lehigh University, biologist Dean Kenyon of San Francisco State University, mathematician William Dembski of Baylor University and microbiologist Scott Minnich of the University of Idaho.

"It's chilling that suddenly in the midst of a national debate over intelligent design, PBS, funded by taxpayer dollars, decides to suppress an educational film that provides a scientific examination of the theory," said

Rob Crowther of the Discovery Institute's Center for Science and Culture.
