NEW YORK, Jan. 8 (UPI) -- A federal judge in New York has ruled the makers of Listerine mouthwash misled consumers and ordered the company to discontinue to offending advertisements.

Judge Denny Chin ruled Pfizer Inc.'s ads for Listerine were "false and misleading," posing a "public health risk," the New York Post reported Saturday.

"Dentists and hygienists have been telling their patients for decades to floss daily," Chin wrote in his ruling.

"They have been doing so for good reason. The benefits of flossing are real -- they are not a 'myth.' Pfizer's implicit message that Listerine can replace floss is false and misleading."

The lawsuit was filed by McNeil-PPC, a Johnson & Johnson company, the market leader in dental floss. The company claimed Listerine's advertising could damage dental floss sales.
