Cancer stem cells may be new target

BOSTON, Dec. 26 (UPI) -- Scientists from across the United States have said the fight against cancer must now be focused on the recently discovered cancer stem cells.

Some scientists believe every tumor contains a small population of cancer stem cells that drive the tumor's growth, the Boston Globe reported Sunday. The cells can produce tumors in a similar process that normal stem cells use to regenerate healthy tissues. The stem cells also resist traditional cancer drugs, which can explain why some seemingly cured patients suffer relapses.

A University of Michigan scientist announced he discovered stem cells in breast tumors two years ago. Since then, a form of leukemia and two types of brain cancer have been linked to cancer stem cells. Scientists familiar with the studies have said more cancers are likely to follow.

Supporters of the cancer stem cell theory have said the discovery could force a profound change in cancer research. Theoretically, if doctors could destroy the stem cells, the tumor would die out.

"It is mind-blowing," said Robert Weinberg, an MIT scientist who is one of the world's leading cancer biologists. "The entire mindset of people must now be refocused onto these stem cells."
