TOKYO, Dec. 12 (UPI) -- A University of Tokyo engineering department team has developed a flexible ultra-thin scanner that can be inserted between book pages, Mainichi News reported.

Associate Professor Takao Someya and his team designed the scanner to comprise of an organic diode film that functions as a light sensor and an organic transistor that reads information from the sensor.

The cost of producing the ultra-thin scanners is only one-hundredth the cost of manufacturing existing scanners, Mainichi reported.

However, the team said connectors and other parts need to be fixed to the scanner before putting it to practical use.
