MOSCOW, Dec. 10 (UPI) -- Russian specialists have dismantled ground equipment used for launches of the Photon and Bion spacecraft at Plesetsk cosmodrome, local media reported Friday.
The equipment will be transferred from Plesetsk in northern Russia to the Baikonur cosmodrome in the Central Asian country of Kazakhstan, the Russian Itar-Tass news agency said.
An unnamed source at Plesetsk was quoted by the agency as saying the equipment will be transferred to Baikonur before the end of 2004 and all subsequent launches of Photon and Bion will be carried out from there. The Baikonur cosmodrome, 330 miles southwest of the Kazakh capital of Astana, is now leased by Russia from the Kazakh government.
The Photon microgravity and materials research satellite is derived from of the Vostok manned spacecraft and the Zenit military reconnaissance satellites. The Bion program, managed by the Institute of Biomedical Problems in Moscow, is an effort in the life sciences. The Bion satellites carried various plant and animal species.
