SACRAMENTO, Dec. 10 (UPI) -- Movie executive Sherry Lansing has been named to a citizens committee overseeing California's new $3 billion stem cell research program.
The first woman to ever head a major Hollywood studio and a cancer research advocate, Lansing was picked to join the 29-member Independent Citizens Oversight Committee by California Controller Steve Westly, the Sacramento Bee said Friday.
Lansing already serves on the University of California Board of Regents. In November, she said she was stepping down from her job as chairwoman of Paramount Pictures when her contract expires at the end of next year and would be devoting more time to non-profit ventures.
She is chairwoman of Stop Cancer, a non-profit volunteer organization that raises money for cancer research. She also serves on the American Red Cross and Teach for America national boards.
