Study: No harm from GM crops

LONDON, Nov. 29 (UPI) -- British researchers say they have found no evidence genetically modified crops harm the environment, the BBC reports.

The Botanical and Rotational Implications of Genetically Modified Herbicide Tolerance Link project looked at varieties of sugar beet and winter oil-seed rape that had been made tolerant to specific herbicides. Those crops were compared to non-GM cereals grown in rotation.

The BBC said the project concluded GM crops do not deplete the soil of the weed seeds on which birds and other wildlife depend.

The study also found there are some "management advantages" to GM crops, as well as cost benefits.
