USDA: Mad cow test 'incomplete'

WASHINGTON, Nov. 22 (UPI) -- U.S. Department of Agriculture officials said Monday their test results for a second possible case of mad cow disease remain incomplete.

"Test results for the (mad cow) inconclusive are not complete," said Alisa Harrison, USDA's press secretary. "There will be no announcements made tonight. USDA will release the results as soon as the National Veterinary Services Laboratory completes the testing process."

Last Thursday, the agency said a cow had tested positive for mad cow disease, which, if confirmed, would be the second case discovered in the United States. The first was announced in Washington state in December 2003.

The second possible cow -- whose location has not yet been disclosed -- tested positive on so-called rapid tests, which are being declared inconclusive until the USDA receives results of confirmatory testing from its lab in Ames, Iowa, USDA's Andrea Morgan said in a statement.

The finding "does not mean we have found another case of (mad cow) in this country," Morgan said. Final results are expected back later this week.
