Singapore eyes diabetic amputatations

SINGAPORE, Nov. 20 (UPI) -- Researchers in Singapore say the nation's 700 annual amputations due to diabetes could be reduced by as much as 85 percent.

The key, says Singapore's senior minister of state for health, is early detection, diabetic education and timely treatment, Channel NewsAsia reported Saturday.

"Diabetes is reaching epidemic proportions worldwide and it is ranked the 8th commonest cause of death in Singapore in 2003," said Dr. Balaji Sadasivan. "The prevalence of diabetes among Singaporeans aged 18-69 years is 9 percent. This is high by global standards."
