British designers develop 'smart' clothes

LONDON, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- British designers are developing "smart" clothing that adapts to changing temperatures to keep the wearer comfortable.

A team from both the University of Bath and the London College of Fashion is using nature as a guide to employ micro technology that will let in air to cool a wearer when it is hot and shut out air when it is cold, a spokesman said Tuesday.

The technology is similar to a system used by pine cones to open up and emit seeds.

"The new smart clothing will make wearers' lives much more comfortable by automatically adjusting their clothing to control their body temperature," said Professor Julian Vincent of the University of Bath.

The project has been chosen as one of eight to represent British science at the Expo 2005 in Japan from March to September next year. The theme of the event, expected to attract 15 million visitors, will be "Nature's Wisdom."
