Shell attacked for Sakhalin oil spill

MOSCOW, Sept. 13 (UPI) -- Environmentalists are attacking Royal Dutch Shell for a major oil spill off Sakhalin island, the Moscow Times reported Monday.

A dredging ship, the Cristoforo Colombo involved in the $10 billion Sakhalin-2 oil and gas project, ruptured last week and spilled 189 tons of oil after it was driven ashore by a major typhoon, the Moscow Times said.

"We are seeing how dangerous this project is in its very earliest stages," Dimitri Lisitsyn, chairman of the Sakhalin-based Sakhalin Environmental Watch told the newspaper. "This is the sort of thing we expected to happen, but not so early on."

The Sakhalin Energy consortium led by Shell, which is operating the project, told the Moscow Times it was moving as quickly as it could to minimize the damage.

"Our representatives are on the ground assessing the situation and participating in the clean up effort," he said.
