Poll: Americans call for healthcare caps

ROCHESTER, N.Y., Sept. 9 (UPI) -- Most people say U.S. healthcare is too expensive and favor federal price controls on prescription drugs and hospitals, a poll released Thursday indicated.

Two-thirds of respondents to a Harris Interactive poll said prescription drugs were unreasonably costly, while six out of 10 said they would favor government price controls to deal with the issue.

A majority -- 55 percent -- also said doctors' bills were extraordinarily expensive, but remained split, 48 percent to 46 percent, over whether the government should cap doctors' bills

In a statement by Harris Interactive, the polling firm noted not everyone calling for price controls thought they should be immediate, but it is an indication of the high level of concern about high prices and interest in some type of action.

The findings are based on a telephone survey conducted Aug. 10 and 15 with 1,012 U.S. adults. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
