Norway finds 14th-century ship in tact

OSLO, Norway, Sept. 6 (UPI) -- Norwegian marine archeologists have found a sunken ship dating back to the 14th century, Aftenposten reported Monday.

Dubbed the Bolevraket, it was found by divers in the Skien River near the town of Telemark as part of a routine survey before the government laid down boulders on the bottom of the river to prevent erosion.

Many feared the vessel had been destroyed during dredging operations in the 1950s.

The vessel was single-masted and is believed to have been about 66 feet long. Archaeologists believe it was sailing from Eidsborg in Lardal when it sank. The wreckage is lying at a depth of just 33 feet of water (about 10 meters) around 1,000 feet upstream from Menstad.

The Norwegian Maritime Museum in Oslo is planning a full excavation of the vessel and hopes to raise its smallest portions, the newspaper said.
