BEIJING, Aug. 23 (UPI) -- China Monday opened the first International School on Climate System and Climate Change with a grim review of how global warming is affecting it.
China has seen rising sea levels, shrinking glaciers, melting frozen ground and species endangerment, said Qin Dahe, director of the China Meteorological Administration during the gathering's opening speech.
He said his agency estimates Chinese harvests may be reduced from 5 percent to 10 percent by 2030 due the global warming, the government-run Xinhua news agency reported.
Qin also warned officials believe the population affected by infectious diseases will increase and torrential rains and floods -- as well as rising sea levels -- will continue to endanger habitants of low-lying and coastal areas.
