Healthy college life avoids later problems

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind., Aug. 18 (UPI) -- College students should maintain a few healthy habits within a busy schedule to avoid problems later in life, a Purdue University professor said.

Regina Galer-Unti, assistant professor of health and kinesiology, said college students often neglect health without realizing it can lead to lifelong problems. Galer-Unti recommends students take some simple steps -- beginning at their dining halls.

"Start by increasing your daily fruit and vegetable servings," she said in a statement. "But, just because there are more choices, that doesn't mean you have to eat more."

Drink water rather than calorie-rich soda, she added.

Students should aim for at least 30 minutes of aerobic activity three times a week, which can be used as a social opportunity by watching television while running on a treadmill, taking aerobics classes or playing sports, Galer-Unti said.

She also recommends students record their walking with a pedometer, with a daily goal of 10,000 steps, which amounts to about 30 minutes of walking.
