Biomarkers detect pregnancy infection

PORTLAND, Ore., July 28 (UPI) -- U.S. researchers have found a way to detect common infections in the womb, which can lead to premature births that often result in the baby's death.

Researchers at Oregon Health & Science University have identified biomarkers in human and non-human primate amniotic fluid -- which fills the womb and surrounds the fetus -- that can be detected within 12 hours of an infection.

Early detection and treatment could prevent numerous premature births, which often result in complications, researchers said.

More than 10 percent of births are premature, and premature births are responsible for 80 percent of newborn deaths that are not associated with birth defects.

"The likely outcome of this finding is that a simple test may be developed to detect the presence of these biomarkers, thereby signaling the pregnant woman has an infection that needs treatment," said researcher Srinivasa Nagalla.
