Healthcare up for kids, down for adults

WASHINGTON, July 1 (UPI) -- A record number of U.S. children had health insurance in 2003, but coverage for working-age adults declined, the Centers for Disease Control said.

The Centers' 2003 National Health Interview Survey released Wednesday indicated the overall percentage of Americans without healthcare coverage remained unchanged last year.

The percentage of children without coverage dropped from 13.9 percent to a record-low 10.1 percent over the course of six years, a direct result of improved government programs to provide healthcare to low-income families.

Forty-four million Americans lacked health insurance in 2003, representing 15.2 percent of the population.

The survey also indicated minority populations are more likely to be underinsured or uninsured.
