Chinese effort to save river fails

BEIJING, June 6 (UPI) -- After 10 years of massive expenditures, China is acknowledging it's making little progress saving the Huaihi River from pollution.

Recent measurements show the river's water quality is as bad as its worst-ever readings in the 1990s.

About 60 percent of the river's water is used for drinking, irrigation and industry, concentrating the pollution, while some enterprises still discharge illegal sewage and many communities have inadequate water treatment.

China has spent more than $7.2 billion on the river over the past decade.

The Huaihe River carries 3.4 percent of China's fresh water, serving about 16.2 percent of the country's population as it runs through the provinces of Henan, Hubei, Anhi and Jiangsu.
