Captive condor lays egg in Oregon

PORTLAND, Ore., April 28 (UPI) -- Officials at the Portland, Ore., zoo are watching a California condor egg to see if it is fertile, the Oregonian reported Wednesday.

On Tuesday, a female Condor named Tama laid an egg. It came just 48 days after her first egg of the season -- the first California condor egg in Oregon in more than a century.

Zoo officials will not know until next week if the egg is carrying a chick, but they have confirmed there are no cracks or damage to the egg. Meanwhile, the egg is artificially incubating.

Tama is one of 12 endangered condors who moved in November to the Oregon Zoo's new Condor Creek Conservation Facility in Clackamas County.
