ASPCA warns cat owners of lily dangers

NEW YORK, April 7 (UPI) -- The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center is leading a U.S. campaign to warn cat owners about the dangers of Easter lilies and other lilies.

"Easter lily, Tiger lily, Rubrum lily, Japanese show lily, and some species of the Day lily can cause kidney failure in cats," said Dr. Sharon Gwaltney-Brant, veterinary toxicologist at the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center. "Unfortunately, all parts of the lily plant are considered toxic to cats and consuming even small amounts can be life threatening."

A cat may develop kidney failure within 36 to 72 hours of ingestion if not quickly treated by a professional. The ASPCA urges cat owners to keep lilies out of their cats' reach, and urges owners to consider alternative plants.

"Part of being a responsible pet owner is to educate yourself on the many different health issues facing your pet. Removing dangerous plants from your cat's home is an important part in having safer, healthier and happier pets," said Michael Brim, public relations and marketing director for the Cat Fanciers' Association.
