Salmon habitat restoration plan announced

WASHINGTON, March 30 (UPI) -- A $3.5 million initiative to restore salmon habitat in four western states and Maine was announced Tuesday by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The initiative is planned to help landowners restore habitat for Pacific and Atlantic salmon. The department release said projects may involve providing shade along streams, restoring spawning beds, removing barriers to fish passages and reducing agricultural runoff.

The program will be available in Alaska, California, Maine, Oregon and Washington, including the Klamath River Basin in Southern Oregon and Northern California. It will be administered by the department's Natural Resources Conservation Service.

"This initiative supports the administration's commitment to restoring the health of the Klamath Basin and critical salmon habitat in other key areas of the country," Agriculture Department Secretary Ann Veneman said in a release. "Maintaining healthy watersheds will ensure long-term salmon survival."
