Egyptian twins to be released

DALLAS, Feb. 12 (UPI) -- Doctors say the formerly conjoined Egyptian twins will be released from a Texas hospital in a few weeks to stay with their parents in a nearby apartment.

Dr. Kenneth Salyer, one of the surgeons who separated the boys, said Ahmed and Mohamed Ibrahim are doing "extremely well" at North Texas Hospital for Children in Dallas and they will continue to receive daily therapy there after they move in with their parents.

Salyer said the 2-year-old boys are regaining strength, balance, and muscle control after spending their early lives flat on their backs, joined at the crowns of their heads. They are now in the same hospital room where they can play with each other for the first time.

Salyer said there has been natural regeneration of bone around the holes in their skulls since the separation last October but they will need more surgery in the late spring or early summer to complete the reconstruction their skulls.

Salyer said he expects the boys to return this fall to Egypt where they are national celebrities. The surgeon said he fully expects the boys to attend college someday and have a life expectancy as long as anyone in their village south of Cairo.
