WASHINGTON, Feb. 11 (UPI) -- U.S. Sen. Larry Craig, R-Idaho, said he will push for legislation to provide tax relief for families caring for older loved ones.
About 22 million people are informal caregivers for seniors, whose activities are somehow limited, said Craig, chairman of the Special Committee on Aging. Families provide 80 percent of long-term care for older people in the United States, he said in the statement.
Craig said he plans to introduce a bill this week to provide a 50 percent tax credit for qualified expenses for care provided to a senior citizen in need of long-term care.
"These caregivers often face extreme stress and financial burden -- especially those we call the 'sandwich generation,'" Craig said, referring to those "sandwiched" between caring for their aging parents and caring for their own children.
