Supercomputer to get upgrade

ROANOKE, Va., Jan. 28 (UPI) -- Virginia Tech's plan to replace the supercomputer processors for their "Big Mac" with Apple Computer Xserve G5 servers is expected to attract business.

Apple initially didn't believe the plan, concocted by Srinidhi Varadarajan, mastermind of Virginia Tech's supercomputer design, was serious.

He proposed to link 1,100 G5s on the school's premises, Techweb reported Wednesday. A Virginia Tech spokesman said although the number seems high, the setup would reduce the space taken up by the supercomputer by a full two-thirds.

Virginia Tech's spokesman said a number of government agencies, including the Argonne National Lab, the National Security Agency, and NASA, have shown interest in purchasing the supercomputer technology.
