Gizmorama: Life in the Tech Age

BUZZ OFF

Scraminal? It might sound like a board game for the Margarita impaired, but actually it's a safety device intended for your pet.

Let's face it, there are certain places in your house where your dog or cat would be in danger -- the top of the stove, near the automatic garage door, to name two. There's also the places where you really don't want them hanging around -- lounging on that fine linen tablecloth in the dining room, for instance.

The idea here is the Scraminal detects the animal and then emits a series of high-pitched tones that annoy the heck out of cats and dogs. You would have to turn the device off if you intended to actually use the area Scraminal was protecting, but the "kids" tend to play when you are not around.

According to several notable cat behavior authorities, it's the immediate reaction of something unpleasant that serves up the best lessons. They also say it is best not to let the cat know from whom the response came. Revenge is best served up next time you leave the house.

Scraminal is totally impersonal in that regard and makes an ideal trainer. The detection beam area from Scraminal is about 3 feet by 10 feet. It's OK if the beam points at an object such as the stove. It will still detect the animal just fine. The instructions also say it's OK to use around kids, too. It mentions nothing about the child's training.
