SARS deaths mount; world toll now 154

WASHINGTON, April 15 (UPI) -- The number of new cases of severe acute respiratory syndrome increased by 47 Tuesday and the number of deaths from the illness rose by 10.

However, several areas that have been hard-hit by the disease -- including eastern Asia and Toronto -- reported no new cases or deaths.

To date, the new pneumonia-like illness has infected 3,235 people worldwide and caused the deaths of 154, according to the World Health Organization.

China, which has nearly half of all SARS cases, reported no new cases or deaths Tuesday, staying level at 1,418 cases and 64 deaths, But Hong Kong, which has the second-highest number of cases, reported 42 more infections and nine more deaths, bringing its total to 1,232 cases and 56 deaths.

The remaining death occurred in Singapore, which also reported four new cases for a total of 162 infections and 13 deaths.

Toronto, which has been struggling to contain an outbreak in a hospital, did not report any new cases or deaths Tuesday.

The United States hadn't updated its count by Tuesday afternoon, remaining steady at 193 cases and no deaths.

WHO officials said they plan to hold a meeting in June in Geneva to discuss global control strategies for SARS.
