Drug reduces spread of genital herpes

SAN DIEGO, Sept. 27 (UPI) -- Researchers said Friday a new study shows treating a person who has genital herpes with the drug valacylovir can reduce by more than half the risk of infecting a partner. Doctors at the American Society for Microbiology conference said infected patients who took the drug not only decreased overall infection but also slashed periodic painful herpes outbreaks in partners by more than 75 percent.
