Tribute to search and rescue dogs

NEW YORK, Aug. 23 (UPI) -- Following the Sept. 11 attacks, up to 300 search and rescue dogs and their handlers went through the wreckage at the three sites and, in tribute to their diligence, fiberglass German Shepherd dogs are now standing guard in front of police stations and fire houses in New York City. The 100 fiberglass dogs, decorated by artists, are a way for the city to express its gratitude to the teams but they also are meant to be a fundraiser.
