Suicide rate highest among Chinese women

SONGJIANG, China, June 14 (UPI) -- Researchers report women in China kill themselves at a rate 25 percent higher than men. China has one of the highest suicide rates in the world, with more than 300,000 recorded deaths a year. A recent study reported China's suicide rate of 21 deaths per 100,000 people annually is almost double that of the United States and well above Japan's 18.8 rate. Among farm women under 40 years old, 67 out of every 100,000 commit suicide each year, researchers said.
