Fat stem cells can become nerve cells

DURHAM, N.C., May 31 (UPI) -- Stem cells obtained from human fat tissue are capable of being transformed into nerve cells that could be used to treat brain and spinal cord injuries, scientists reported Friday. The research raises the possibility this virtually limitless supply of stem cells could carry the same benefits as the controversial embryonic stem cells, which have the potential to become any type of cell and treat diseases ranging from diabetes to Parkinson's.
