New molecule blocks allergic reactions

WASHINGTON, May 1 (UPI) -- A new way of preventing allergies that has been shown to be effective in mice could lead to novel treatments in humans for conditions such as asthma, hay fever, hives and food allergies, scientists reported Wednesday. The technique uses a molecule that binds to receptors on cells and may prevent allergens such as peanuts, ragweed and pollen from triggering the chain reaction that leads to symptoms so familiar to allergy sufferers -- sniffling, sneezing, watery eyes -- but can also lead to death in severe reactions to certain foods.
