emergency situations; a network of local radio stations providing
real-time mapping of developing crises; a compendium of ideas for
getting better accountability in remotely managed programmes - they are
all original ideas and all have been funded from a special pot of money
created to foster new thinking in humanitarian practice.

BANGKOK, 23 May 2012 (IRIN) - As Mohammed Mohammedi lay trapped in the
car with his co-worker, pinned down by heavy gunfire, they promised
each other that whoever made it out alive would tell the other's
family. Now, 12 years after he was captured and beaten by militias in
Somalia while carrying out a polio vaccination campaign, he realizes
this was a "futile promise".

ADDIS ABABA, 25 May 2012 (IRIN) - Aid agencies are calling for more
food assistance for areas in southern and northeastern Ethiopia where
erratic rains have adversely affected the mid-February to May `Belg'
crop.
