Kabwe, March 03, ZANIS - The Zambia Armature Boxing Federation has picked eight boxers in preparation for the second continental Olympic qualifiers to be hosted by Namibia from March 22 to April 1, 2008.

Federation president Charm "Shuffle" Chiteule, who announced this in Kabwe today, said the selection was done after a boxing tournament held at the Kabwe Municipal Hall on Saturday.

The boxers, who have mostly been picked from Green Buffaloes include, Tresford Kaziwe (light fly weight), Brian Mwabu (Bantam Weight), Martin Chibela (light weight), Presicous Makina (welter weight), Sidney Mulenga (light heavyweight).

Others are Alfred Kaziwe (feather weight) from Nkana and Cassius Chiyanika from Maamba in Southern province.

The federation has already one boxer, Hastings Bwalya, who qualified for the Beijing Olympics to be held in China in August this year.

Bwalya, who is a lightweight boxer qualified during the first continental qualifiers held in Algeria in January this year.

Chiteule described the weekend boxing tournament to pick the National Team as a huge success as fans were treated to some wonderful entertaining fight the whole afternoon.

"The federation picked the National Team after the tournament, which will go into camp at Arrackan Barracks in Lusaka.

The team will be preparing for the second continental Olympic qualifiers to be hosted by Namibia from March 22 to April 1, 2008," Chiteule said.

The coaching staff include Wisdom Mudenda, Gibson Kasonde and Musonda Chinungu.

Chiteule, a former national featherweight champion and professional boxer showered praise on Joseph Chingangu for winning the ABU heavyweight title.

"Boxing in general was given a big lift last Saturday when heavy weight Chingangu won the ABU title, while Esther Phiri is doing her own thing in the female category. This is wonderful. Congratulations to you Joseph Chingangu," Chiteule said.

Chiteule also urged Oriental Quarries, the promoters of Chingangu and Esther Phiri's promoters, Exodus Promotions of Anthony Mwamba to work hand in hand with Zambia Amateur Boxing Federation to develop boxing to higher standards.

And to keep the selected National team in shape, an invitation tournament has been lined up for this Saturday in Chingola.

Chiteule said the invitation is organised by professional boxer Douglas Chilembi who will sponsor the tournament.
