GLENDALE, Calif., Aug. 7 (UPI) -- Weird Al Yankovic recently put out the first No. 1 album of his career -- could a gig at the Super Bowl be next?

A fan of the 54-year-old singer started a Change.org petition requesting that Yankovic be allowed to perform at the Super Bowl XLIX halftime show. The NFL has yet to respond.

The game, which will be played in Arizona in February 2015, featured the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Bruno Mars as its halftime acts last time around.

"For decades Weird Al has entertained fans, young and old, with his popular clever parodies and unique sense of humor," petition organizer Ed Ball wrote. "Having him headline the Super Bowl XLIX Halftime Show. would not only be overly accepted by the millions of views, but it would remain true to the standards and quality of the show business we have come to love and respect out of this prestigious event."

The petition has been collecting supporters at a rapid rate and is already closing in on 55,000 digital signatures.

"Just imagine him out there rocking with Jack Black & Melissa McCarthy, while parodying Pharrell & Robin Thicke," Ball wrote before the petition hit 20,000 signatures. "Heck, those artists can even join him on stage, start off with their songs before Weird Al kicks in with his versions."

Ball is hoping that Yankovic will get in touch and add his own signature or comment on the petition.

Yankovic's Mandatory Fun sold 104,000 copies in its first week after being released on July 15, earning him the top spot on the Billboard 200. It was the first comedy album to make it to the top of the chart since 1963.
