LOS ANGELES, June 7 (UPI) -- A Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy suffered an allergic reaction to bee stings as he helped victims of a vehicle crash that disturbed a beehive, police say.

The driver of a catering truck lost control going downhill just north of Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood, Calif., on Saturday, according to reports.

The truck hit a street pole and a tree, disturbing a hive of bees and causing thousands of the venomous insects to swarm the premises as the deputy arrived on scene to assist.

He was stung an unknown number of times, causing him to have an allergic reaction, Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman Margaret Stewart told KNBC.

Emergency crews rushed the three crash victims to the hospital in critical condition. Stewart said the deputy's reaction was minor, and he was not taken to the hospital by ambulance.

In 2013, a swarm of bees killed a dog in the same area after a neighbor cut down a tree that had a hive attached to it.

Bees will swarm aggressively when their hive is disturbed, but in many cases -- such as in Farnham, England, last month -- the insects will swarm when seeking a new hive with their queen.
