420 mile marker in Colorado changed to 419.99 to prevent thefts

Colorado Department of Transportation previously changed Mile 69 sign to read 68.5

Jan. 13 (UPI) -- It’s been less than two weeks since recreational marijuana became legal in Colorado and it certainly hasn’t taken long for the change to have some unforeseen consequences.

Apparently the theft of road signs is one of them.

The 420 mile marker along Interstate 70 has been stolen multiple times and the state Department of Transportation finally decided to do something about it.

The sign, which now reads Mile 419.99, hopefully won’t be as attractive to stoners who like to steal.

"Obviously people steal these signs," said CDOT spokeswoman Amy Ford. "In the past, if a sign was stolen too much, we wouldn't replace it. This is sort of an innovative way for us to keep the sign there."

Four-twenty is a term generally associated with cannabis culture and marijuana enthusiasts often celebrate on April 20.

The CDOT previously changed a Mile 69 sign near the summit of Cameron Pass to read
68.5 after it was reportedly taken by randy robbers.
