Dec. 2 (UPI) -- The Chinese Crested and Chihuahua mix crowned the winner of the World's Ugliest Dog Contest in 2007 has died.

Karen Quigley confirmed that Elwood, who took home the title of the World's Ugliest Dog Contest when he was just two years old, passed away in New Jersey. He had recently fallen ill and died on Thanksgiving morning after spending eight years "filled with love and devotion.”

"The best part was he did not suffer, he was in my arms and with me," Quigley said. "I couldn't be more proud that people who haven't met him loved him ... I couldn't be more proud."

Quigley explained in 2007:

"He just doesn't have any teeth on the left side of his mouth, so there's nothing to keep his tongue in there. It never goes in. It's out all the time. He's very confident in his looks. He thinks he's very handsome."

After winning the World's Ugliest Dog Contest, Elwood captured the hearts of fans from all over the world.

"For a little dog he touched a lot of lives in his short time," she said Saturday. "He did a lot of things. He was a big part of my life, and my heart."
