Nov. 21 (UPI) -- An unnamed South Carolina burglary victim says that boxes of cremated remains that were found on the side of road contain the ashes of her dogs.
In addition to making off with the remains of an American Bulldog and two Cocker Spaniels during a burglary on Nov. 6, the thieves also took a gun, a laptop, and a PlayStation.
Two boxes of remains were discovered by Erin Gunter's husband and nephew.
"I believe that there was probably a break-in nearby and whoever got them probably thought that they contained valuable items. Jewelry, something of the sort," said Gunter.
After getting some idea about what the boxes contained, Gunter had her sister take a look. "She has helped spread ashes before, so just kind of for other confirmation on it we wanted her to look at it and just confirm it, and as soon as she saw them she said that's exactly what it is," Gunter said.
Gunter called the Lexington County Sheriff's Department about the remains. "A very skittish deputy came out. Hands remained in his pockets. He would not even walk toward us. In fact, he backed up as I got closer to him with the boxes," said Gunter. "He informed us those boxes were not riding with him."
Gunter is still in possession of two boxes of ashes. One of Gunter's family members found a third box of remains on Tuesday afternoon and turned it in.
As of now, the sheriff's department still has the third box of remains and an official determination about the contents of the boxes has not been made.
