(UPI) -- An 83-year-old Ohio woman was able to chase an intruder out of her home by beating him with her cane.

Athens County Sheriff Patrick Kelly said deputies responded to an active robbery call at the home of Rozella Brown at around noon on Monday. Brown informed them that she had heard her doorbell ring but did not answer it.

Shortly thereafter, Brown saw a man crawling across her kitchen floor moving towards her bedroom. She approached the man and noted that he was wearing a gray jacket and blue jeans.

Brown began whacking the man with her cane, causing him to cover his face and run into the living room. Unfortunately, Brown had her purse in that room and the thief was able to take her wallet.

She continued to hit the man as he made his way out of the house and also asked him his name. Before escaping out the back door, the man responded with "Austin."

Deputies attempted to use a K-9 unit to track the suspect but were unsuccessful. The elderly woman estimates that “Austin” got away with about $100.
