Handley, a marijuana grower who supplied the owner’s dispensary, went on an “extravagant and expensive trip” to Las Vegas with the victim and returned under the impression that the man was “extremely wealthy.”
After alerting his co-defendants about his observations, the four allegedly began plotting to rob him. While spying on the victim, the defendants saw him driving to the desert where he was discussing a possible investment deal.
According to prosecutors, the defendants mistakenly concluded that he had been burying money.
In early October, the four went to the victim’s house and kidnapped him along with his female roommate. They took the pair out into the desert and then burned the man with a blowtorch, sexually mutilated him, and doused him with bleach to destroy DNA evidence.
The defendants left the victims on the side of the road but kept the man’s penis.
Police were able to trace the crime back to the defendants by linking Handley to a suspicious car spotted by a witness.
The female victim was unharmed, but the male victim spent “an extensive period of time in the hospital recovering from his injuries.”
