Colorado cat burglars targeting homes with dog doors

(UPI) -- Thieves in Colorado have been using dog doors as their point of entry during a recent string of burglaries.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s office says there have been at least six dog-door robberies within a mile span since Oct. 18.

Greg Mueller was a victim of one of the robberies and had his iPhone and cash stolen while he was asleep with his wife.

"They are pretty bold. You’d think with a doggie door there’s dog in the house, so you’d think it might deter them but it didn’t.".

Every door at Mueller’s home was locked except the one. “There’s really no way to lock a plastic slab doggie door,” he said.

In addition to iPhones and cash, the burglars are also going for iPads and cellphones. All the thefts have taken place between 2 and 6 a.m.

Deputy Chad Teller says the department believes that the same person or persons are responsible for all the crimes. “It’s going to be somebody small that’s going through the pet doors, possibly a female,” said Teller.
