Burdensome Indonesian school curriculum blamed for teen sex video

Official says curriculum gives no room for students to “develop emotional intelligence.”

(UPI) -- The Indonesian National Commission for Child Protection is blaming the school curriculum for a recently-surfaced pornographic video involving junior high school students having sex in a classroom at a school in central Jakarta.

The commission believes that the school curriculum fails to promote social and religious values, leaving teens unable to process all of the adult content and messages that they are bombarded with via the Internet.

"Our schools give too much work to students and the curriculum taught provides no room for them to develop emotional intelligence. As a consequence, schools tend to pursue excellence in the national exams," said commission chairman Arist Merdeka Sirait.

The parents of the female participant told police their daughter was forced to participate in the clip. Police had a difficult time questioning the girl about the situation because her family disappeared for almost two weeks after reporting the incident. The male video participant also vanished after the report was filed.

City Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Rikwanto said the police finally managed to speak to the girl but indicated that she was attempting to avoid the media. "The investigators questioned the girl in a place outside the headquarters," Rikwanto said.

Rikwanto said investigators have questioned 17 people about the video -- including the students who were behind the camera, the principal, the vice principal and three school guards -- and that they believe both students participated in the video willingly. "However, we're still investigating further about the possibility of bullying or coercion [of the girl]," he said.

According to the students who shot the video, this was the third time they filmed the two students having sex in a classroom at the school.
